Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast in one day
Pompeii and Amalfi are about 40 km apart by road, but the mountains and the coast road make that feel longer. One day is enough to see the essentials of both, as long as you plan it. Here is a realistic timetable, by tour and on your own.

A realistic day on your own
Base yourself in Sorrento, the easiest hub. Take an early Circumvesuviana to Pompei Scavi and be at the Porta Marina gates for 9:00, with a named ticket bought online. Spend 3 hours in the ruins, then train back to Sorrento by about 13:30 for lunch. Catch the SITA bus along the coast to Positano (sit on the right for the sea views) for the afternoon, and if the season allows, a ferry to Amalfi for sunset before the last bus or boat home. It is doable, cheap and flexible, but buses fill up in summer and one missed connection costs you a town. Many travelers do Pompeii one day and the coast the next instead.
The same day on a tour
A tour removes the connections. From Naples, a small-group tour covers Amalfi and Pompeii in about 8 hours; from Rome, the day trip does Pompeii and Positano in 13. Either way you get about 2 hours in the ruins with a guide and 1 to 2 hours on the coast. If you have to cut something, cut a second coast town, not Pompeii: two unhurried hours in the ruins beat a blur of three villages. And whichever you pick, start early; the site opens at 9:00 and the heat builds fast.
